Now old people are afraid of losing their minds. A lot of older people than I can't remember anything. When you can't remember you can't take care of yourself, and it is pathway to an early death.

My daughter, not surprisingly, also has bad Alzheimer's genes, and she found medical research proving that the bad gene with alcohol was far worse. Most of the bad gene's effect was for alcohol drinkers.

I have been wine making for 15 or 20 years, and it is one my main hobbies. I don't care for being drunk really; mostly because after-while it makes me sleepy. I drink a glass of wine a day, and I'd drink it slowly to savor it. I have about 50 gallons in the basement -- that is about 250 bottles worth. Most of it is still aging in carboys and demijohns.

So I get this bad news on the drinking. Here is an example: Midlife Alcohol Consumption and Later Life Cognitive Impairment: Light Drinking is Not Protective and APEO Genotype Does Not Change This Relationship. The title tells the story, and it is a 2022 article so related articles are in the endnotes.

I decided it is better to not drink and delay losing my mind by a few years. I don't think it is a tough choice. I mean drinking isn't that fun.

Dealcoholized Wine

I am planning to dealcoholize my homemade wine. It is easy to do that.

1. Put the wine in the top of a double boiler with water in the bottom.

2. Monitor the temperature at about 180F you will see the alcohol boiling off. (I am not making any effort to collect the alcohol and make brandy. Maybe someday.)

3. As it boils off the temperature will go up to about 195F, and stop boiling. The double boiler is almost incapable of boiling in the upper pot. Hold it there for a few minutes.

4. That's it. Turn off the heat and let it cool.

5. I find that I lose about 30% of the volume in this process. That is a lot. 12-14% is alcohol and the other 16-18% is water boiling away. You could add water back. Commercial dealcoholized wine is diluted back, often with grape juice. My thought is that a full-bodied red may benefit from dilution with water, and that a white may benefit from concentration.

I have noticed the pH dropping after dealcoholization; not sure what the chemistry is there. My theory is that we are releasing acetic acid that had been bound up some how. Acetic acid boils at 244F.

Greg Turcohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14047416857522227643noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6632309762681348919.post-482106934490984812022-11-20T21:37:00.000-05:002022-11-20T21:37:29.419-05:00Brooks Launch

I was looking at the wear on my old shoes, and I decided I needed new ones. I wore generic Yak-Traps rubber grippers on my old running shoes. At about mile eight of my nine mile run, I found I only had a gripper on my left foot, and the right one was lost somewhere on the trail.

First I ordered a ASICS Gecko, and it was far too small. I usually order 11 in athletic shoes and 10 in street shoes. The 11 was long enough and even wide enough, but the shoe pressed down on my hallux MTP joint enough that it hurt. (Hallus is a latinate word for big toe, and MTP is what people say when they really mean metatarsophalangeal.)

Ugly Nike Pegasus Trail shoe

I poked on running websites, and I found most people just run in their trail running shoes with no metal spikes -- they just take it easy on the ice.

I ventured to Dick's Sporting Goods which in my community has the undersized shoe department. (Some large Dick's have supersized shoe department depending on the market.) They only had one men's trail runner shoe which was a Nike Pegasus adapted for trail running with an aqua blue rubber sole. While I have had Nike Pegasus shoes, they are not really my favorite Nike. And it was at full price at $159, but worst of all it was ugly.

The shoe I ended up buying was a ASICS Gel Venture 8, which had plenty of space for my hallus MTP, and pretty good cleats on the bottom as you see below.

The yellow outsole seems to be a rubber. Clearly the middle sole is a low density foam probably EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) and is marked "GEL", and the innersole seems to good quality - perhaps polyurethane.

In size 11, the shoe weighed 340 grams. This is close to the 338 of my current shoes, Adidas Solar Boost.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhDh-tCiNTKqb-tiQw5CucpExe5Nn9KXb6EP28AF5MoIafuBzmzfoCRnoZB7mDWQCLLOS0UWXmpelukDVsXvxTFlgB0GP_w3aCESeP4n05RdLFPi39wlwAh58hkKOWNzJ4IXJpD9i3T7xFGIkyVvAyAxp6PjG5Qmm9DT_H-vYxXgHxD2W31rsjtehZvsQ=s1280" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; On the other hand, they felt best with my current injury.

I did a little research and found that Nike had introduced a new ReAct, and is promoted as a good shoe for injury recovery. These numbers are ultimately from the NYTimes, but I pick them up from Google. I have plotted them, and calculated the seven day rolling average.

Cases really ramped up in the beginning of October, and the most recent days have been the highest ever. Covid cases were already sky-rocketing before the Trump rally on Oct 17, so it hard to blame that rally for the problem.

Wisconsin cases have also gone up aggressively since early September - perhaps because that is when school started. The press blamed the spike on cases at universities.

realize that not being at the meeting makes it hard to perform the Treasurer’s duties, and I am hoping that John Sarnow, our assistant Treasurer could possibly help. This is called simply SolarBoost, with no ST. I will alternate between these pairs for a while. Both Solar Boost shoes have more support in the forefoot than the Brooks shoes that I had been using. Even one day in my old, but low-milage Brooks Levitate 2's makes my big toe hurt.

Initially the new Solar Boost pair seemed to be identical to the March 2020 Solar Boost ST pair. The sole is beige instead of black, so I hope it wears as well. The fit is just as good. I really like the Solar's upper. Link to Solar Boost ST's review.

The weight of one SolarBoost shoe is 319 grams. In this case it was a sore left bunion, and maybe it is caused by my too-small pair of Brook Ricochets or maybe my worn out Brooks Levitate 2s.

In any case, I went to my local shoe store, and checkout the Brooks Levitate 3's, but they are built as a slip-on shoe without shoe tongue, and so the laces cannot be used to adjust the tightness of the upper. I had a pair of shoes like once (PureBoost ZG), and while they was comfortable for standing in, they could NOT be held tightly enough on my foot. My toes either hit the front of the toe box, or the knit fabric puckered when I tightened down on the largely decorative shoe laces. Eventually I took the laces off, and used them as slippers around the house. They are still comfortable to stand in.

I read some reviews, and decided to try Adidas Solar Boost ST. I selected them because they seem to address the problems that I had with my last Boost shoes, which is too little structure, and generally floppiness to them. Of course, the Boost sole is springy and does a great job of protecting my foot. They also last a long time.

Solar Boost has somewhat less Boost expanded polyurethane and two structural features. It has a thermoplastic olefin bead between the midsole and the upper for support, and it has a dumbbell shaped nylon insert that keeps the shoe from twisting. The higher-end Boost shoes always had nylon inserts, and this version has an even larger one.

It has a knitted upper that is stretched comfortable. While the styling isn't the flashiest, this color isn't so bad.

In size 11, the SolarBoost weighs 338 g, which is 27g or 7% less than the Brook's Levitate 2s they replaced. They are about the same as my old Brooks Ghost 9's (335g). More numb

2020 Solar Boost 338 g
Brooks Levitate 2 365 g
Brooks Ghost 9 335 g
2018 Pure Boost 335 g
2015 Boost SuperNova 335 g
2012 Energy Boost 300 g

In the view below you can see how the white polyolefin elastomer near the heel provides some support and protection, but does not extend around the back of the heel.

In the following photo, one can see the nylon support that prevents twisting. This shoe sole has the Continental Tire logo. Continental has a cooperative agreement with Adidas since 2007. My 2017 Pure Boost shoes has a similar looking black rubber outersole, but no Continental logo. My Boost SuperNova has a different style outersole.

In the photo below, one can see the triangle of the nylon stabilizer extending around on the inside heel. Maybe this is for some sort of added support, or maybe it is a styling feature.
Plot: 16 year old Margot (Michelle La) disappears on the way on a Thursday night after studying with kids from school. Her Dad David (John Cho) isn't too worried at first, but no one can find her. He calls the police and Detective Vick (Debra Messing) volunteers to work on the case.David pokes around her computer looking a Gmail, Facebook, Instagram, and a YouTube knockoff. It looks like a murder by a vagrant, but just as they are putting all behind them, one of the YouTube friend's turns out to have a fake photo, and the movie goes down a rabbit hole that leads to a roller coaster ending. Didn't see that coming. [imdb] [photos]

<h style="color: magenta;">Review: </h>This film is emotional and gripping even though it is primarily told in video chats, text messages, and cutting & pasting text. The technique is refreshingly different, but it worked great her.

Like a good mystery, you learn more and more, and then everything you thought you knew gets turned upside down. And it has an emotional roller-coaster as well. I really like how I gradually was aware that something was wrong.

The writing and directing is the real star of the movie. That is what makes it different and suspenseful. Director Chaganty says the editing was also critical, the way the test appears and the timing were critical.

<h style="color: magenta;">Big time spoilers</h>: When it comes down to it, this is a worst-case cyber-bullying story, where a quiet pretty girl is stalked by a nerdy, quiet boy, but when they meet IRL everything goes wrong and there is a fatal accident.
My original pair of Brooks Levitate shoes was getting old and too soft in the forefoot. I was happy with them, so I bought a second pair and this one is the third. There are approximately 650 miles on my old shoes. The new model is out: the Levitate 2.

Brooks promotes Levitates as having high energy return, and Popular Science did a nice review of shoe resilience and how much energy return can help a running. I know when I got my first pair of (high energy return) Adidas Boost, I thought it helped my running by 10-15 seconds a mile. PopSci also talks about the polyurethane foam midsole which is covered with shiny metallic paint.

The Levitate is stiffer than the Adidas Boost shoes that my local Dick's Sporting Good's carries. For my aging feet, the stiffer shoe provides support in the forefoot, and that helps to avoid discomfort in my big toe. I suspect that higher end Adidas shoes have more support, but I haven't have not had a chance to try them out.

Brooks has re-done the upper: all knitted fabric with a knitted cuff around the ankle. I like the cuff because it is comfortable. I got this blue/red/black design that my wife liked. I can't get over the unusual color pallet, maybe it is edgy, but I think it misses the mark. I may put black laces on it.

My Levitate 2's in size 11 weighs 363 grams, which is 5 grams lighter than my Levitate 1 shoe in the same size, that is one percent lighter. This is about 24 g heavier than my other running Brooks shoes.

Although Levitate is promoted for energy return, I wear them because they make my feet feel better.
It has been a while since I bought two pairs of the same kind of shoe in a row, as I have now the Brooks Levitate. I bought my last pair in October, and this is what I wrote then. Those shoes have been good training shoes. I have alternated them with other kinds of shoes, and they don't seem worn out yet.

Anyway, my feet have been sore, and my old Brooks Levitates were the only ones that my feet liked. I bought another pair. Same model, but they are 4 grams lighter at 364 g each shoe.

The red stripe design is pretty flashy. No changes to the shoe otherwise.

The advertising says the sports drinks replace the electrolytes in sweat, so I looked that up. The concentration of Powerade and Gatorade seem to be about half that of sweat. That is not a problem for me since I believe people need to replace their water at a faster rate than they sweat it out. Meaning that water also leaves by respiration and by urination.
It has two interesting articles on why stock prices are so high, and when they will go down. The two articles are "Why are stock prices so high?" by Jeremy Grantham, and The S&P 500 Just Say No by Kadnar and Monteir
More on shoe design here and here.

I was happy to see that Brooks stepped up the styling for Levitate especially in the Black and Gray color. I was surprised to see a metallic coating over the midsole. The metallic looks good and shows of the angles of the midsole, like it does on an automobile.

I don't buy running shoes for looks, but after they wear out as running shoes, I will wear them as casual shoes, and the appearance is more important then.
The outsole has this chevron pattern, and I imagine it is for rain and trial running. Often Brook's shoes have a horseshoe pattern, as in the Launch. The horseshoe pattern is supposed to help with heel spurs. Happily I don't have any heel spurs. 🤞

I got a size eleven which had a large toe box, and plenty of room. Maybe a 10.5 would have worked. I wear an eleven in my Brooks Glycerin and a 10.5 in the Launch.

A size eleven shoe weighed 368 grams. This is heavier than the Brooks Glycerin 15's at 338, the Ghost 9's at 335 and the Launch at 292g. My Adidas Pure Boost is 331, and the Nike Pegasus is 311g. I think these shoes are heavier because they will last longer.

I took these out for a ten mile run this morning. They were comfortable for the whole run even through the shoes were new. The sole was firm and seemed to grip the road well. I was trying to gauge the energy return, and I can say they are a bit stiff but still comfortable.

I never bought a pair of Brook's Glycerins because they were so heavy. I would try them on, and it was just too much foam under my feet. These Glycerin 15's weigh 338 g, which is a tiny bit heavier than my Ghost 9's at 335g, and noticeably heavier than the Brook's Launch at 292 g. (These are in size 11. The size 10.5 were 333 g; that was too small and I took them back.)

I wonder if the new Glycerin 15 is going to be as protective because there only 3 grams heavier. Maybe I should have tried on those Ghosts again.

The last shoes I bought were the lighter weight Brook's Launch, which I haven't worn too much because my feet have hurt. I am not blaming the Launch, because I haven't worn them much, however, I would have worn them more if my feet felt better.

One of my problems is walking around barefoot too much in the summer. I keep trying to make myself wear sandals, and that is helping slowly.

Do you like the style? The black looks better than the other colors, but Brook's shoes just look like running shoes, while many Nike running shoes have more design. (Of course, I didn't like those as well on my feet.) These Brook's beat the hell out of the Adidas Pure Boost below for style. See below.

Prior to the Glycerin 15's I had purchased these Adidas Pure Boost, which have a big chuck of springy foam on a simple upper and outsole. They feel great to walk around in, but can simply be too soft in the forefoot. They were the only Boost Shoe that was in stock at my local Dick's Sporting Goods. I wanted to try these on, because I have had trouble buying Adidas shoes via the internet because the fit wasn't right. I did not want another shoe that was too small.

These shoes are 331 grams, just 2 grams less than the Glycerin's that I think are so heavy.

My other Boost shoes have lasted a long time. Two pairs were retired because of the upper rather than wear on the sole.

These are about the plainest shoes in the store. They make the Brook's look fashionable. They were only $79.99 which is much less than the $150 that I paid for Boost shoes when they were new. Presumably the upscale ones look better, but my local Dick's didn't have them. I am guessing Adidas put these low-end shoes out for back-to-school sales.

I got these Brooks' Launch 4 shoes on April 1, 2017. Not sure why I got them, I had just done a race, and I thought my old shoes were a little to heavy for racing in. Also my feet were not sore, so I thought I lighter shoe would be more fun to run in.

This Brooks shoe is better looking all the other Brooks that I have had.

I am pretty happy with these. I haven't had sore feet after wearing them despite the relatively thinner sole.

One shoe weighs 292 grams. My Brooks Ghost 9's weighed 335 g and the my Brook's Ghost 8's weighed 345g.

I was at the wine store. And depraved person the that I am, I bought two bottles because I like the graphic design on the label. The Intrinsic, which is a Cab from Washington State, had a wrap around label, so I took a picture with the panoramic function on my phone -- worked great.
This is a painting I made for a wine label. While it is a little rough here, it looks better in label size.
This is a photo I took and then applied a photoshop filter to. I like it pretty well.
I went with my DW to Dick's Sporting Goods. I had time to kill while she looked at jackets.

I tried on these Pegasus, because I know some people love them.

I was surprised at how stiff they were on the inside of the foot. This seemed like it would be easy on my right knee, which has been hurting. I

I ran 11 miles today in the new shoes, and my knees feel great.

I have also been babying them by running on a grade.

These shoes are pretty light at 311 g per shoe. This is 24 gram/shoe lighter than my Brook's Ghosts 9s.

They are nice looking shoes with a red-fade-to-black upper and the novel sticking around the laces. I like the hollow bottom under the heel too.

June 30 Update: Initially these shoes were great. They are more structured than other shoes and they gave me support that I wasn't used to. They are still OK, but I find after a few miles my fore foot is getting sore, and changing shoes makes that better. I am surprised that they wore out so fast since I have been rotating between multiple pairs of shoes. I have no more than 450 miles on these shoes, so it feels early to retire them. Perhaps I am being cheap, the websites say 350-500 miles is reasonable depending on your weight.

Perhaps that low density EVA foam is not holding up like it should. The midsole is sunken in the fore foot. The innersole is nearly new.
